Most lodging in Kapoho is within its two small subdivisions, Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland. There is a wide selection of vacation rentals, from ohanas (small units attached to a larger home) and modest homes, to elegant oceanfront homes with resort-like settings. The nearest hotels and condos are 29 miles distant in Hilo.
In Kapoho, oceanfront and modern comfortable accommodations can be hard to find from mid-December through March and in July, unless reserving well in advance. Accommodations are readily available from September through mid-November. However, the more popular oceanfront homes may require reservations well in advance throughout the year. The more flexible you are in your dates, the later you can reserve and find suitable lodging. If you want the perfect oceanfront setting and home, book early! Making early reservations also applies to extended stays (over one week) if you wish to stay in the same home throughout your visit.
Kapoho vacation homes are significantly more economical than in west Hawaii. They largely range from $100 to $300 per night, plus cleaning fee and tax. However, you can find small, simple and/or rustic accommodations for less, or pay up to $900 per night for private resort-like living. The main factors affecting the cost of vacation rentals are the quality, amenities, size and, especially, the location of the home. Modern oceanfront vacation homes are on the upper end of the price range, while small (especially ohanas) or modest homes back from the water are on the lower end.
Most vacation homes have variable rates depending on length of stay and time of year. Expect lower rates (per night) for stays of a week or more. Rates are higher during North America's winter months (especially the holiday season) and lower in the Fall (Sep through mid-Nov).
Some vacation homes are advertised as being in Kapoho, when they are not. Kapoho is one of the few areas in East Hawaii that has easy and safe ocean access. Because of this, it is much favored by most vacationers. Elsewhere, homes on or near the ocean can be many miles from safe ocean access. If you find a vacation home (especially oceanfront) advertised as in Kapoho at a rate that is too good to be true, it probably is ... In addition, a few homes in Kapoho advertised as oceanfront, are not. Most, but not all, oceanfront homes within the Kapoho Beach Lots or Vacationland subdivisions in Kapoho have safe water access from their yard. Be sure to ask about safe access to ocean waters for enjoying water activities .
